Student Voting (General Election 2017)

Thank you for contacting me about student voting and the General Election.

I am committed to ensuring that everyone who is eligible to vote is able to do so, so that everyone can participate in the democratic process.

A person can be entered on more than one electoral register if they are resident in more than one constituency and spend an equal amount of time at each. I understand your concerns but the final decision as to who is eligible to register at an address rests with the electoral registration officer for that area

It is an offence to vote twice in the same type of election, such as in a UK General Election. Doing this could result in a fine of up to £5,000. On 27th December the Government published its response to Sir Eric Pickles' report on electoral fraud and will introduce a number of his recommendations to tighten controls around the conduct of polls to eliminate electoral fraud.

It's my view that we need to increase the public's engagement with the political process. The Government's focus is to get as many people as possible on the electoral register and it is working with a wide range of organisations to bring this about.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
